what must be said
"On the other hand, the Kiss emulation and guitar-god posturing is a pretty thin disguise for a band that's pretty obviously a mere shadow of its former self. Weezer's first two albums were almost unanimously loved, hyper-influential, near-masterpiece collections of quirky, personal, addictive power-pop. Stripping down to the basics is one thing, but removing almost every element and characteristic that separated the band from the other million quartets-with-guitars is a sad, sad sight to see. There's a thin line between homage and unoriginality, and it's hard not to notice that, in their effort to emulate their guitar-rock heroes, Weezer has to some extent become a fairly straightforward, above-average bar band." -Pitchfork
ok, so I've only heard one song off the new album... but it was the one that most reviews said was the "best" off the album. Maybe I'll give the album more of a try later. In any case, "dopenose" [along with its video] certainly fits pitchfork's description to a T. It's kind of fun to sing along with, but not quite... it's not as poppy as "blue" nor in any way quirky. Very straightforward rock. I mean, it's not that it's "bad" per se, it's just nothing special. Been done. Overdone. Nothing particularly "stand out" about it. I mean, the older stuff, with songs about jello and sweaters... that was original... these lyrics are much more vague, and less fun. I wish they'd called it quits after Pinkerton, to be frank. That way they could tour with only -good- songs. I mean, even the b-sides for pinkerton and "blue" were great. "You gave your love to me softly" and "Jamie" are both classic Weezer tunes. It's not like the two first albums were just lucky... they were good. Weezer had skill. Then they went on holiday for a long time. They "come-back" with oh so much hype and weak sappy pop to back it up. So they feel bad about the pop and decide to"rock-out." They do so, and do so well, but not with anything special. The first two albums are oft hailed as "perfect," "classic," "masterpieces," and such, whereas the latter two are more along the lines of "good," "pretty fun," and "reminds me of KISS." Weezer went from wearing "nerdy" shirts and playing quircky original rock, to dressing and acting like "rock stars," for what? To"gain back" their respect? When did they lose it? Oh wait, -after- they decided to "comeback rockin'." They should really lose the wonderful name Weezer and go with something more forgettable, like "Afterburner" or "Fizzle" or any other "rock 'n roll" name, to match their unmemorable "rock 'n roll" music. Basically: what Pitchfork said.
